Sparks family demands answers after murder suspect escapes custody
Family says they learned of Tre’Veon Jackson’s escape through social media, not law enforcement
CADDO PARISH, La. (KSLA) - Five years after Horace Sparks was killed, the man accused of his murder, Tre’Veon Jackson, escaped Caddo Parish custody after going to Ochsner LSU Health for a medical evaluation Monday night. Sparks’ family is demanding answers into how this happened and why they were not properly notified.
Scanner traffic details escape
KSLA Investigates obtained scanner traffic from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“Was he secured? Does he have handcuffs and leg irons?” “K-9-3 units out here. No handcuffs. No leg irons.” “K-9-3. He doesn’t have them on or you can’t find them?” “He does not have them on.”
According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Jackson got out of his restraints while a deputy was opening the side doors.
“This is a murderer. Like, still to this day, not found. Like, somebody dropped the ball and, like, we’re the ones left with no answers,” a family member said.
Family says they learned of escape from social media
Sparks’ family says they are worried about Jackson being on the run, and the way they found out about his escape adds more concern.
“Do y’all remember what time CPSO reached out to y’all to say Tre’Veon was on the loose, or escaped. Do y’all remember the time?” KSLA’s Joliyah Daughtry asked.
“Well, I never talked to no one. Like I said, I found out through social media. No one told me nothing,” a family member said.
Sparks’ mother, Pamela Ervin, said she was at work when her caller ID showed someone from CCC around 10:30 Tuesday morning.
“I saw CC- about 10 something, 11 something yesterday morning. It wasn’t at night when he originally-” Ervin said.
“So 12 hours after, roughly 12 hours after he escaped, is when someone from Caddo Parish called you to let you know the person arrested for your son’s murder,” Daughtry said.
“I don’t know because I never talked to no one,” Ervin said.
Prior escape attempts
The Sparks family wants answers, as this is not the first time Jackson has tried to escape, according to Caddo Parish scanner radio from the night he got away.
“This is going to be a subject that’s hid in the ceiling tiles at the jail trying to escape. This is his fourth or fifth time attempting to escape. Multiple battery-on-officer charges,” Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office radio traffic said.
“Nobody from Shreveport or Caddo came to knock,” a family member said.
Family wants answers
The Sparks family says they want Jackson back behind bars and answers into how this happened.
“For him to leave and disappear that quick. We’re the ones left with no answers and it’s just not fair. He’s just out there on the loose. Somebody dropped the ball,” a family member said.
