Part of I-30W in Hempstead Co. closed due to hit-&-run, fatal wreck; police searching for suspect
HEMPSTEAD COUNTY, Ark. (KSLA) - Arkansas State Police are responding to multiple accidents on I-30W in Hempstead County.
Officials say the interstate is closed between Fulton and Hope.
State police say a contracted worker with the highway patrol department was putting out cones when they were fatally hit by a vehicle. Police say the driver then fled the scene on foot and has not been found.
Troopers say traffic then began to pile up, causing two wrecks. The first wreck involved two vehicles and resulted in minor injuries.
The third wreck involved 18-wheelers and a pickup truck. Troopers say the pickup truck was hit from behind by an 18-wheeler, causing it to crash into the 18-wheeler in front of them. The two people in the pickup truck were pronounced dead.
Those with minor injuries were taken to area hospitals.
