SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The following information was provided by the State of Texas House of Representatives:
Texas State Rep. Gary VanDeaver has announced he is stepping down as the representative for House District 1, effective at the close of business Monday, Sept. 21.
VanDeaver released the following statement regarding his resignation:
It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that I have delivered a letter to Governor Abbott notifying him of my decision to resign as State Representative, HD1, effective at close of business today, September 21, 2026.
Serving in the Texas House has been one of the great honors of my life. The members and Speakers I have served with are some of the most outstanding servant leaders I have ever met. Texas is a better place because of the sacrifices these people have made to serve this great state.
My reasons for leaving the legislature before my term expires in January are two-fold. First, the constituents of HD1 remain the priority and this decision will provide the opportunity for my successor to be better positioned to serve the great people of HD1 in the upcoming 90th legislative session. Secondly, this decision will allow me to better prepare for life after the legislature as I continue to search for ways to make Texas a better place.
I have been blessed with the best staff anyone could ask for and any success I have enjoyed has been a result of their great work, for which I am very thankful. I am also thankful for the friendship and support of so many others and look forward to continuing our friendship as we all continue to serve.
May God continue to bless the great state of Texas!
