NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The National Hurricane Center is monitoring what is now dubbed Invest 90L - a tropical disturbance that’s organizing and has a 50% chance of developing into a depression or a named storm.

As of Monday afternoon, the system is sitting over northeastern Mexico as a trough of low pressure with disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

Late Tuesday or Wednesday, it could re-emerge over the northwestern Gulf. Once it moves over the warm water, environmental conditions could support the development of a short-lived tropical storm by Wednesday into Thursday.

Tropical storm watches or warnings may be issued as early as Tuesday.

Whether or not this becomes a tropical storm, the flooding risk is high.

The Gulf Coast should prepare for periods of intense rainfall over the next several days. This rain could produce widespread, life-threatening flash flooding, urban flooding, and river flooding- especially in areas with poor drainage or recent heavy rain.

Beyond the flooding rain, residents along the Gulf Coast should also prepare for gusty winds that could knock down tree branches and cause power outages, and coastal flooding along portions of the northwestern Gulf Coast.

If a tropical storm develops, it will be named Arthur.
