La. Treasurer John Fleming talks unclaimed property checks and more during visit to Shreveport
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming was in Shreveport on Tuesday, May 27 discussing a variety of topics from the legislature to his campaign for senate.
KSLA’s Donna Keeya sat down with him.
Earlier this spring, the Louisiana Department of Treasury launched its K-12 transparency website. Fleming says the website has gone well so far. He says this was the result of a companion bill to school choice.

“If you can compare the expenditures on the average student versus how well that that school performs, you know is it. Are there enough utensils or tools for the teaching you know is money getting to the classroom.”
And for 1 in 6 Louisianans, it may soon be payday. Fleming says some residents are owed money through unclaimed property. Unclaimed property checks will be going out soon.
“May 31, we’re going to send out 143,000 checks. That will amount to more than $34 million. To Louisianans, it’s going to come to your mailbox. And so, my admonition is this: don’t throw it away. Cash it, keep it, but do not throw it away,” Fleming said.
Down at the capitol, the treasurer said he has his eye on insurance rates and tort reform.
“We’re not really seeing the reforms there that we need, so that that’s one area that worries me because if we’re going to see those insurance rates come down, we need really good solid legislation that brings us in line with other states,” Fleming explained.
Towards the end of 2024, Fleming announced his run for senate with plans to run against current senator Bill Cassidy.
“We need someone who will support the president, not go against him. So again, Senator Cassidy voted to convict Trump, which would have prevented him for having run for re-election,” Fleming said.
Fleming previously worked for the first Trump Administration.
