SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Louisiana State Representative Cleo Fields was back in Shreveport hosting a town hall over at Southern University Shreveport’s Nursing Center on Friday (March 21).

”I think it’s important to hear what the people think, what they feel. Hear what their thoughts are about what’s taking place in Washington. I mean, I think that’s how we find out what’s going on in the district. It makes you a better representative,” Fields said.

It was the fourth town hall the congressman has held in the past week as he prepares to head back to the nation’s capital.

People filled the rows of seats at the town hall meeting in Shreveport and were grateful that Congressman Fields gave them the chance to be heard.

”Well, I think it is part of the job. As a pastor, I may not agree with what my members say but they deserve for me to listen,” Little Union Baptist Church Minister Asriel McClain said.

“Mr. Fields is willing to stand up and answer questions from his constituents. I’m actually in Mr. Johnson’s district, but he’s not holding any town halls. So, Mr. Fields stepped up and decided to do one, and I’m glad he’s here,” Shreveport resident Bill Robertson said.

While at the town hall, Fields spoke on the congress’ new budget and how it may affect those in Louisiana before he fielded questions from the crowd.

Those who attended the meeting voiced their concerns to the congressman. Issues such as social security, cuts to government funding, and DEI programs were brought up. Fields heard the people’s concerns and made connections with them so they could discuss them further.

While many people in congress have started to opt out of holding town hall, Fields knows how important the meetings are.

”In order to be a good representative, you’ve got to do this. You’ve got to find out what the people think what they feel,” Fields said. “There’s a lot going on in Washington, and I know that people are pretty fired up and mad. And I just need to be the person to listen to them.”
