TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) - The Bowie County Sheriff's department gave special recognition on Friday to a citizen that went above and beyond.

Ronald Pippen received a certificate of appreciation for assisting a lone deputy in capturing and subduing a burglary suspect.

Sheriff James Prince said earlier this month a burglary was apparently in progress next to Pippen's Maud Texas home.

"Mr. Pippen put his life in danger to help us," said Sheriff Prince. "That is something citizens don't always do."

Deputy Michelle Carrier was first on scene and confronted the suspect she said was not cooperative. As Deputy Carrier waited for backup Pippen assisted Carrier until other deputies arrived. Deputy Carrier said this situation could have gone bad if not for Pippen's actions.

"He probably prevented me from using force using deadly force on that guy that night for sure which is a situation that nobody wants to be put in probably saved that guys life and probably saved me from doing something I never want to have to do," said Deputy Carrier.

Arrested and charged with burglary and evading arrest was 33-year-old Steven Montoya Jr. of Maud Texas.

Montoya remains locked up at the Bi-State Justice Center Jail in Texarkana.
