SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans made a big donation towards the fund raising efforts for a female veterans monument.

In the summer of 2017, the Women Veterans of the ArkLaTex set out to secure funding for a very personal project. The group is working towards erecting a bronze statue at the Veterans Memorial at the Bossier City Municipal Complex, in honor of all female service members.

Tuesday afternoon, DAV Chapter 30 donated $10,000 to the cause. That's more than double their initial donation of $3,000 earlier this year.

"They've got a mission to fulfill and that mission is, in this case, is honoring women veterans," said DAV Chapter 30 Commander, Mike McTiernan. "In this area and across the United States women veterans are pretty much-forgotten veterans. It's unfortunate, it's sad, but they did just as much as the rest of us did, maybe more."

The latest donation now puts the women's group near the halfway mark of raising the $100,000 needed to fund the project.

Any money not used towards the statue will be placed into a trust which will be used to help women veterans in the local area.

"This is the first project of its kind in the state of Louisiana, the state of Arkansas and the state of Texas," explained Women Veterans of the ArkLaTex President, Sandy Franks. "This is the first. This honors women from all five military services, those who have served, those who are serving today, and those who will serve our nation in the future, it's all women veterans."

They're calling on military members and civilians alike to help donate, no gift is too small.
