CAMPTI, LA (KSLA) - Two people are under arrest after a fire in Campti that took the life of a 10-year-old boy.
Billy D. Adams Sr., 35, of Natchitoches and Regina Vanzant, 54, Adams' mother have both been charged with one count of negligent homicide in the fire-related death of Billy D. Adams, Jr.
The body of Billy D. Adams, Jr. was found in a bedroom following a structure fire on Cater Street in Campti early Friday, July 20.
The pair admitted to investigators they left the child unsupervised while they were under the influence of drugs, according to a news release from the LA State Fire Marshal's Office.
According to the Natchitoches Parish Coroner's Office, the preliminary cause of Billy D. Adams, Jr.
Billy D. Adams Sr., who had who evaded authorities from the time of the fire through Monday, July 23, admitted he had unsafely connected exposed wiring from the structure he and the child were living into his mother's trailer home next door.
Investigators have deemed the cause of the fire Undetermined with the Inability to Rule Out Electrical Malfunction.
Vanzant will be booked into the Natchitoches Parish Jail pending her current incarceration on unrelated charges in Jackson Parish.
