CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - A 68-year-old woman spent months on a couch in their home in northern Caddo Parish.

She did not move for any reason.

Witnesses say no one checked on the Mira resident for more than a month.

Now Alice Essary's health is "too graphic to describe" and she is in critical condition in a Shreveport hospital, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office reports.

Her husband is in jail, accused of failing to get help for her.

Essary's daughter, who lives in Springhill, went to check on her mother Saturday and called 911 after arriving at the house in the 11600 block of Westside Lane.

Essary was found to be severely malnourished and unresponsive and had life-threatening wounds and medical issues, sheriff's deputies said.

It's "the worst case of neglect I've ever seen," Caddo sheriff's Detective Davis Romero said.

Caddo Fire District 8 personnel removed her from the couch and took her to the hospital in critical condition.

On Tuesday, Romero got a warrant to arrest 66-year-old Johnny Wayne Essary on a charge of cruelty to the infirm.

Patrol deputies arrested him the same day.

He's been in Caddo Correctional Center since being booked there at 4:59 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.

His bond has been set at $7,500.
