SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - After a formal election, Mount Canaan Missionary Baptist Church has announced its next leader.
Pastor Gregory Lamar Oliver Sr. will take the reins as the 17th senior pastor. He succeeds Pastor Harry Blake Sr.
Oliver will deliver his first sermon at Mount Canaan on Sunday.
For the past 22 years, he has served as senior pastor at True Vine Missionary Baptist Church in Monroe and Bastrop.
"Mount Canaan is very familiar with Greg Oliver, and Greg Oliver is likewise very familiar with Mount Canaan," Blake said in a news release. "He has preached on many occasions over the years to this congregation, and last year even assisted me in training our most recent class of deacons.
"He is a magnificent preacher and teacher who is nationally recognized and well equipped to take this church to the next level. Pastor Oliver comes highly recommended by a bevy of nationally known pastors. I believe for those reasons, he was overwhelmingly selected by this congregation as its next shepherd."
Oliver earned his bachelor of theology degree from United Theological Seminary in Monroe.
He has served as senior pastor at St. Stephens Baptist Church in Vidalia, Zion Hill Baptist Church in Ferriday and First Baptist Church in El Dorado, Ark.
Blake will continue to serve Mount Canaan as pastor emeritus.
"I am eager and excited to assume the role as senior pastor of this historical church and win souls in the Shreveport area," Oliver said.
"Pastor Blake has laid such a solid foundation at Mount Canaan, and I am honored to succeed him."
The church will announce Oliver's formal installation in the near future.
