CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - In an effort to combat the number of boaters driving under the influence, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has launched Operation Dry Water.

It starts on Friday, June 29 and ends Sunday, July 1.

During that time, agents will be out in full force patrolling state waterways for impaired boaters.

According to the department, alcohol is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating incidents.

In 2017, Louisiana had 19 boating fatalities, with alcohol playing a role in 16 percent of them.

Nationwide, statistics from 2017 reveal that 19 percent of all boating incident fatalities listed alcohol as a contributing factor.
