Downsville motorcyclist dies in collision with pickup

(KSLA) - A two-vehicle wreck claimed the life of a resident of Downsville, a town that straddles the Lincoln-Union parish line.

Ronald R. Withers, 58, was driving a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle south when a northbound 2007 Chevrolet pickup made a left turn in front of him, according to Louisiana State Police.

The two vehicles collided on Louisiana Highway 15 a few miles north of the Ouachita Parish line about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Withers was taken to a Farmerville hospital, where he died.

The motorcyclist was wearing a DOT-approved helmet at the time of the wreck, Trooper Glenn Younger said.

Now the driver of the pickup is being held on several charges, including vehicular homicide.

Authorities say 58-year-old Eros resident John D. Becker's breath-alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit.

A toxicology sample also was taken from Becker and will be submitted for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation. at the time of the crash.

Troop F has investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 18 deaths this year.
