SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Caddo Parish will join shelters across the country this weekend in holding a special animal adoption event Saturday to mark National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, which is Sunday.

In addition to spreading awareness of the thousands of animals in need of homes, shelters like CPAS hope to encourage people to consider adopting animals and help control the dog and cat population.

"We believe that there are so many pets and animals that deserve loving homes. Just like little Cody here, we take in so many animals here at the animal shelter, all whom deserve loving homes. We want to bring awareness to that by giving folks the opportunity to see some of the different pets that we have available," said Caddo Parish spokeswoman Krystle Grindley.

There will be more than 20 pet vendors and dog rescue organizations represented at the event, which is free and open to the public from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at the Caddo Parish Animal Control Center 1500 Monty Street, Shreveport, Louisiana.

In addition to discounted adoption fees, CPAS will offer free food and drinks, family activities, a "Touch a Truck" exhibit and prize drawings.
