MILLER COUNTY, AR (KSLA) - Republican Jackie Runion Is the new Sheriff-elect of Miller County, Arkansas.

The Miller County Clerk's office reported that Runion brought in 10,462 votes. His opponent, Independent David Slater, received 4,986.

Runion has more than 42 years of law enforcement service, most recently as a captain with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, supervising the commission's southwest Arkansas district. He previously worked with the Miller County Sheriff' Office and the Texarkana, AR, Police Department.

Runion has said he will make the department a proactive agency through keeping the jail safe and secure.

During their campaigns, Runion and Slater agreed on the need to carry on the war against drugs in Miller County.

Like Runion, Slater is also a long-time law enforcement agent. This was Slater's first foray into politics.

Ron Stovall, the current Miller County Sheriff, chose not to run for re-election. Stovall held the position for eight years.
