BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) - A Shreveport man is accused of firing a gun at 3 people at a Bossier City apartment complex.

No one was wounded. However, one round struck a vehicle parked at Riverwood Apartments.

Another round went through a window of a unit at the complex in the 2100 block of Riverwood Loop. Two people were in that apartment.

Bridget Boyd, a resident of another apartment, remembers hearing 3 or 4 gunshots about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. That's when she called 911.

"Next thing you know, police were out here looking for whoever was shooting," said Boyd, who was in her apartment with 5 children. She told KSLA News 12 that she awakened the child who was asleep at the time so they all could take cover.

"Then I heard another gunshot."

Bossier City police say 32-year-old Vernell Tiyon Demming fired a gun at 3 people then fired another round after officers arrived at the apartment complex.

"Witnesses say the gunman fired the shots from behind the complex not far from Plantation Park Elementary School," city spokesman Mark Natale says in a statement about the shooting. "Shortly after police arrived on the scene, officers heard another shot come from behind one of the apartment buildings and saw a male subject run away."

Officers chased him but he got away in a vehicle.

Detectives said their investigation led them to Demming.

They arrested him at his workplace Thursday afternoon.

He then was booked into the Bossier City Jail on 1 count each of aggravated assault, aggravated assault upon a peace officer, felon in possession of a firearm, possessing a firearm on school property, stalking, illegal use of a firearm and aggravated criminal property damage.

His bonds total $600,000.
