BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) - A 16-year-old is in critical condition and in a coma after he and a friend were viciously attacked in Bossier City. Investigators say the attack was unprovoked. The teen's mother tells KSLA News 12 her son has been in Pediatric ICU for the last two days in a medically-induced coma.

"The thought of losing your child, it was pretty rough," explained Magen Dancer. "It's hard for me to just sit there and look at him on that way it's tough it really is."

Dancer says her son, Matthew Szempruch and his friend were walking down Montgomery Lane in the Old Green Acres neighborhood Sunday night when they were jumped.

"They weren't looking for trouble them two, it just kind of came out of nowhere," said Dancer.

Bossier police say at least one person used some sort of stick or pole to attack the teens. The 18-year-old suffered injuries to his hand, while Dancer's son is being treated for head trauma. Dancer says they're keeping him sedated until the swelling in his brain goes down.

"He's trying to come out of that, he's struggling but they want to keep him under there," explained Dancer.

With doctors' orders to limit visitors so her son can rest, Dancer went into work on Tuesday to try and keep busy.

"As a parent you want to help him and protect him and that's the hardest part for me is not being able to do anything."

So why were the teens targeted? Police say they're working to get that answer.

Bossier Police say Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest. That number (318) 424-4100.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with medical expenses. Those wishing to donate can click here.
