BOSSIER PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Lightning is being blamed on a storage tank fire in Bossier Parish.
It happened around 5 p.m. Sunday in a field off of LA Highway 3.
Heavy smoke could be seen in the area as Benton Fire District rushed to put out the blaze.
Firefighters had to cut the lock on a gate to gain access to the tank.
According to Benton Fire Chief J.T. Wallace, the fire is believed to have been started by lightning. Chief Wallace explained that lightning doesn't have to directly strike an object to start a fire. He said often times the static electricity alone from a nearby strike can cause the tank to catch fire.
It's unclear at this time if the storage tank sustained damage from a direct hit or static electricity.
The blaze remains under investigation.
