Gunfire kills 1 man, wounds Shreveport resident
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - One man is dead and another is wounded as a result of a shooting along Shreveport's riverfront.
An exchange of gunfire that started on Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway near Airport Drive led to the discovery of a bullet-riddled Mercury SUV in the business district just north of downtown Shreveport, police say.
The investigation thus far has focused heavily on the SUV, which was found in the parking lot of Saia LTL Freight along Airport Drive.
Initial reports said a man was found unconscious. Authorities now say a man in the driver's seat of the SUV, identified as 23-year-old Khelif Hicks, was pronounced dead at the scene, making him the city's 21st homicide victim this year.
Also, another 23-year-old Shreveport man was taken by ambulance to University Health in Shreveport for treatment of a gunshot wound to a leg that authorities said did not appear to be life-threatening.
"It is yet to be determined where the victims were coming from, or headed to, when the events unfolded," says a statement from Shreveport police Cpl. Marcus Hines.
Police yet to release the second victim's identity.
Investigators have recovered a firearm from the SUV but say that gun does not appear to be the one with which the 2 men were shot.
Caddo 911 dispatch records show the call about the shooting came in at 4:19 a.m.
Joining 8 police units on the scene between Hawn Avenue and Jack Wells Boulevard were 4 Shreveport Fire Department units responding to a medical emergency at the same location. The police presence there has since grown to 11 units.
Authorities ask anyone with information about the shootings to call Shreveport-Caddo Crime Stoppers immediately at (318) 673-7373 or visit the group's website.
