Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an ongoing telephone scam.

According to police, victims receive a phone call from someone who says he or she is from the Internal Revenue Service or the Department of Homeland Security.

The caller tells the intended victim that they owe taxes. The caller says to avoid going to jail, he or she must make a payment to clear up the issue.

BPSO is reminding residents not to give out personal information by phone or text, especially bank account information.

Those who have received a phone call like this or gave personal information to the callers is asked to call the IRS scam department at 1-800-366-4484. Victims can also call the Bossier Sheriff's Office at 318-965-2203.

Detectives with the Bossier Police-Sheriff Financial Crimes Task Force are investigating this scam.
