SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Authorities are calling the deaths of an elderly Little River County, AR couple a "mercy killing" murder-suicide.

"We received a 911 call pertaining that two people would be found dead in a trailer," said Little River County Sheriff Gary Gregory.

Sheriff Gregory said 75-year-old James Judd and his 73-year-old wife Barbara were found dead inside their home at on Hwy 32 East Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies arrived and found a note taped to the door that they believe was written by James Judd. They found the couple inside the house, both dead of apparent gunshot wounds to the head.

"The issue was apparently due to illness and the gentleman basically proclaimed that he couldn't see his wife suffer in pain anymore and upon doing so, shot her and shot himself," said Sheriff Gregory.

Police believe it was likely the husband that made the 911 call, and that he did not want to live without his wife of 53 years.

Police say a weapon was found inside the home and they are not searching for any suspects.

Their bodies have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock. Arkansas State Police are heading up the investigation.
