GRAMBLING, LA (KSLA) - Grambling State University is putting a major hiring decision on hold because of the possibility of massive funding cuts to higher education in Louisiana.
The school is suspending the search for a new athletic director due to "uncertainty around the university's budget," Grambling State President Willie Larkin said.
The hiring process will be delayed until "we can see a clear way forward," he added.
Meantime, Obadiah J.K. Simmons is hanging onto the position of interim director of intercollegiate athletics that he's held since May 1.
Counting interim athletic directors, whoever is hired would be Grambling State's sixth athletic director in five years.
J. Lin Dawson resigned as Grambling State athletic director in June 2011. Aaron James, a member of the Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame who was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, stepped into the position on an interim basis June 29, 2011.
Athletic director Percy "Chico" Caldwell was hired in February 2012. When he resigned July 9, 2013, James again was named interim athletic director.
James was fired in July 2014.
Simmons has been Grambling State's interim athletic director since May 2015.
