BOWIE COUNTY, TX (KSLA) - The Bowie County Sheriff's Office is warning people about an ongoing telephone scam.

Police say the callers claim to be working for the Internal Revenue Service. The callers tell people that if they do not pay the taxes they owe, local law enforcement would be sent out to arrest them.

According to police, this scam has been reported to the Bowie County Sheriff's Office for the past several years. Police say the telephone scam continues to be a problem around tax season.

The calls are reportedly showing up as the number 206-201-2540.

The Bowie County Sheriff's Office reminds residents to never give out personal or payment information over the telephone to unknown callers.

According to the IRS, agents will never call to demand immediate payment on taxes owed.

The IRS warns taxpayers that the agency will not demand payment without giving customers an opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.

According to the IRS, agents will never ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

Police are asking residents to report these calls to the United States Treasury website.
