SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - A church deacon and his wife were inside cleaning their Shreveport sanctuary when lightning apparently struck.
"It shook it pretty good," said Mack Bowman, a member of Bright Star Baptist Church, 3330 Meriwether Road.
"My wife said that lightning hit something."
Bowman said they didn't know it was the church building until someone called and said it was on fire.
"That's when we got out and called the fire department."
Shreveport Fire Department investigators now are trying to determine if lightning did indeed spark the fire.
"My house faces this church," Leslie Garnett commented on KSLA News 12's Facebook page. "I was on the phone with my mom when I saw the lighteing hit the church."
No injuries have been reported.
"Thank God my Dad and stepmom are okay!" Tiesha Bowman posted on KSLA News 12's Facebook page.
Caddo 911 dispatch records show the fire was reported at 12:06 p.m. Jan. 21.
The Fire Department sent 16 units to the scene between Parkdale and Denny drives. That number has since fallen to 10.
"Thank God it did not take the whole church down," Bowman said.
