SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - With three children running around the backyard, laughter has become a permanent part of the Bethard family. Meg and Ben Bethard recently had a son, Hall, 7 months ago. He was born inside The Birth Place at CHRISTUS Highland. The Birth Place is one of 17 programs that benefit from the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Meg has given birth to two of her three children inside The Birth Place. What drew her to that location was the uniqueness of the center. The mother labors, delivers and recovers in the same room.

"I had a wonderful nurse, I had a wonderful anesthesiologist. I loved everybody that came in my room. It was fun. I mean I really had fun. I don't know if that's normal," explained Meg. "I love how they monitor you. Katie, my nurse, told me everything that needed to happen and what was going on, if his levels were dipping and she was telling me why so it was very comforting."

Katie Hall Smith has been a labor and deliver nurse at The Birth Place for the past 5 and a half years. She has seen firsthand how funding from the Children's Miracle Network has helped her and her staff.

"Children's Miracle Network made it possible for us to get rid of some of the outdated equipment and bring the best things to our patients," said Katie.

Children's Miracle Network has funded not only equipment, but also supplies and bedding for The Birth Place.

"Our primary goal is for the health and safety of the mother and the baby," explained Katie.

Meg said she saw that firsthand while she was inside the facility with her two children. Children's Miracle Network recently helped fund 5 baby warming beds for the NICU at CHRISTUS Highland. The cost for those beds was $125,000.
