CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Steve Prator has been re-elected as sheriff for Caddo Parish.

Prator took the lead early on against Caddo Constable Eric Hatfield.

This is Prator's fifth term to serve in the position.

Prator served 17 years as a Shreveport police officer starting in 1973. Appointed as Shreveport police chief in 1990, he held that position until winning election as Caddo's sheriff and taking office in 2000.

During his time as sheriff, Prator founded the Sheriff's Safety Town, which is the first and only permanent program in the state to promote early childhood safety education. More than 37,000 second graders have visited Safety Town since its doors opened in 2008.

He also developed the Northwest Regional Re-Entry Facility which works with the state Corrections Department to help offenders get their lives back on track once they leave the prison system.
