NATCHITOCHES PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Still smoldering today is a barn full of hay along U.S. Highway 71 about 3 miles south of Clarence.

It caught fire and was reported to the Natchitoches sheriff's 911 center about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters with Natchitoches Parish Fire Protection District 3 contained the blaze to the barn. "It was totally involved when we got there," Fire Chief Sam Ragan said.

The farmer has since disced a fire line around the barn. Otherwise, Ragan said, they are allowing the 500 rolls of hay to burn themselves out within the barn.

At a cost of $40 to $60 a roll, the lost hay had an estimated value of $20,000 to $30,000.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
