One of two men shot during struggle over gun dies

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - A man who was shot multiple times in the upper torso Wednesday morning in Shreveport's Cedar Grove neighborhood has died, authorities report.
Now police investigators are working to determine what led to the deadly shooting at a residence off Fairfield Avenue.
Initial reports were that James Shivers, 28, of Shreveport, and another man were shot as the two struggled over a gun.
A woman and seven children also were in the dwelling in the 400 block of Abilene Street at the time. None was wounded. But based on crime scene investigators' early findings, one of the bullets came close to striking children in a nearby room.
Preliminary information suggests Shivers was at the home when an altercation of an unknown nature erupted between him and the other shooting victim, Hines said. "It is believed Shivers was shot at some point during the altercation; however, investigators with the Shreveport Police Violent Crimes Unit are still seeking additional information in the matter. "
"Somebody's been shooting again. That's what I said," said Willie Taylor.
Willie Taylor lives two doors down from the home where shots were fired Wednesday morning. Taylor says he was just waking up when he heard three or four shots close near the doorway of the home.
His tells us his first reaction was 'not again.'
"They always are shooting something out around here, to be honest with you. But sometimes they are shooting up in the air" said Taylor.
Police responding to a call at 5:25 a.m. about the shooting found Shivers, whom they identified as the father of seven of the children, in the front doorway of the residence. He was taken by ambulance to University Health, where he died a short time later.
And shortly after 5:30 a.m., a man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his forearm. Early on, police confirmed that this man said he was wrestling with someone in front of the home and that two shots were fired during the struggle.
The man, who has not been named, is connected to the Abilene shooting but has not been officially listed as a suspect, Hines said.
