PANOLA COUNTY, TX (KSLA) - The Panola County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that one man is dead after a shooting right outside of Carthage, Texas.

It happened shortly after 9 p.m. at a home on County Road 121 in the Murvaul community. Authorities say 49-year-old Sarah Gilpatrick Venable of Gary, Texas called 911 screaming that she had just shot her husband.

Deputies arrived to the scene to find the woman in the front of the residence and her husband, identified as Jay Venable, lying on a bedroom floor with a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Authorities also found a .380 semi-automatic pistol on the kitchen counter with a spent shell jammed in the receiver.

Sarah Venable reportedly told deputies that she and her husband got into an argument over her losing her job that day. She then went into the master bedroom, retrieved a gun from under a mattress and walked into the bedroom he was in and shot him.

Jay Venable's body was sent to the Southwest Crime Lab in Dallas for an autopsy. Sarah Venable was arrested and charged with murder. She was taken to the Panola County Detention Center where she is awaiting arraignment.
