KEITHVILLE, LA (KSLA) - Authorities have identified remains that were discovered under a bridge in Keithville Friday afternoon.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office says the body has been identified as 51-year-old Russell "Rusty" Carter Smith Jr.

The remains were reportedly brought to the attention of authorities by the brother of a student on a school bus who spotted something under a bridge in the 10000 block of Mansfield Road.

The student told his brother about what he saw, and the brother called the sheriff's office.

Smith's 2004 Chevy Impala was towed by authorities on January 2, 2015 after it was stuck in the mud just off the roadway. Authorities say Smith's family claimed the car days later from Reynold's Wrecker Service and although no official missing persons report was filed, family members say they have been looking for Smith.

According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, family members told them that it was not uncommon for Smith to take off for periods of time without notice.

Detectives say that an official cause of death has not yet been determined but foul play was not immediately suspected.
