PLEASANT HILL, LA (KSLA) - A 10-month-old Sabine Parish infant is in a Shreveport hospital, after being found pinned beneath her deceased father Friday night.
According to Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers, the baby was discovered after her older sibling went to a neighbor's house on Marie Lane in Pleasant Hill to tell them he thought his father was dead.
That's when Jason Fields, believed to be in his 40s, was found on his bed with the child underneath him. Rivers says Fields had been sitting on the edge of the bed with the baby on the bed behind him and his laptop on his lap when he fell back.
Fields had a known medical history, according to Rivers, and likely died instantly of a sudden cardiac arrest. No foul play or drug overdose is suspected. An autopsy will not be conducted due to the condition of the body.
Based on the condition of Fields' body, Rivers believes he may have remained there on top of the baby for as long as 3 days. There are only box fans in the house, and Rivers notes that it was particularly hot inside the home.
Paramedics were called for the baby, who had begun to suffer injury to her skin because of the conditions she was in. She also reportedly suffered another injury to her body as a result of her situation that resulted in a "dark spot" on her body that was alarming enough for the child to be airlifted to University Health in Shreveport.
Her current condition is not known.
According to Rivers, Fields lived alone with the children, the oldest being around 4 or 5 years of age. The children's mother was in jail, but after an emergency appeal to a judge, she was released a few days early to be with her children.
