Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin had until Noon to report to the minimum-security federal prison in Texarkana, TX.

TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) - Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin reported to the Texarkana Federal Correction Institution with just 20 minutes to spare before the Noon deadline Monday, where he will serve a 10-year sentence on corruption charges.

Accompanied by his wife, daughter and sons, Nagin walked inside the minimum-security prison around 11:50 a.m. He was seen hugging family members before they walked away and Nagin was frisked and escorted inside by a corrections officer.

Nagin was convicted in February on 20 counts related to bribes he received from contractors for city deals in New Orleans. In addition to bribery, the charges included wire fraud and money laundering.

Nagin was recently granted a public defender to appeal his conviction, because his family says they are having money problems. In court documents, the former mayor claims to have less than $25 in the bank and his family lives off of $360 a month in food stamps.

They are also far behind in car payments and payment on their home in Frisco, Texas, just about two hours from Dallas.

He says they now live off of family donations, food stamps and his wife's minimal income.

Ex-contractor Mark St. Pierre and Nagin's Former aid Greg Meffert saw their sentences slashed for their testimonies against Nagin.

Nagin was in office as Mayor of New Orleans from 2002 to 2010.
