NEW BOSTON, TX (KSLA) - An East Texas middle school student has died from complications of a non-contagious form of meningitis.

New Boston School Superintendent Gary VanDeaver confirmed Thursday morning that a 6th grade student died of a non-contagious form of meningitis.

The child's family has identified her as 11-year-old Emmie Hayes. They say Emmie got sick last Wednesday with an ear ache. She went to the emergency room and ended up back in the ER on Friday. At that point, she was sent to Little Rock, where she died on Wednesday.

According to her parents, the drainage made it's way into Emmie's brain and spinal cord.

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
