SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - We are checking up on area school cafeterias to make sure the food our kids are served is safe to eat. This week we're grilling Caddo Parish middle schools. Out of the 12 schools, only 2 made the cut.
Donnie Bickham Middle served up a plate of perfection. Ridgewood Middle School knew the recipe for success, they also had 0 violations.
Now to the schools that didn't make the grade. Health inspectors turned up the heat on Caddo Middle Magnet School. They had 1 critical violation and 2 non-critical violations. Their critical violation is: raw meat was not separated from ready to eat food or is stored above ready to eat foods. This poses the risk for cross contamination and could make a student sick. Cross contamination can lead to food poisoning or worse. Their 2 non-critical violations are: garbage cans outside did not have tight fitting lids, and there were unnecessary items around the kitchen.
Oil City School cooked up 3 non-critical violations. Surfaces in the kitchen that do not directly touch foods was not made of the approved material, there were items around the kitchen that didn't need to be there, and the equipment used to keep foods at the safe hot or cool temperature were not working properly. Vivian Junior High School racked up 5 non-critical violations. Their plumbing was not maintained, the walls or ceilings or the attached equipment was not in good condition, surfaces in the kitchen were not made of a corrosive-resistant, non-absorbent, smooth material, there were items in the kitchen that didn't need to be there, and lastly, the equipment they use for holding foods at the safe hot and safe cold temperatures was not working properly.

Surfaces in the kitchen that do not directly touch food were not made of the approved material, garbage cans outside were not closed, and there were unnecessary items in the kitchen. Youree Drive Middle School had 2 non-critical violations. Garbage cans outside were left open and there were items in the kitchen that didn't need to be there.
