CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) – A Caddo Parish deputy accidentally shot himself in the thigh while putting his gun in his holster.

The sheriff's office says 55-year-old Deputy Larry Trant is assigned to the work release program, transporting prisoners to and from work assignments.

About 5:00 p.m., Trant had just brought some inmates back to the Caddo Correctional Center. He had just gotten out of the sheriff's transport van and was holstering his gun while getting into his personal vehicle. The gun accidentally fired, hitting Trant in the thigh and exiting through his calf.

While the investigation is not complete it appears that Sheriff Steve Prator is looking at the shooting as an honest mistake, and no policy or law was violated.

"When you have 800 people carrying guns occasionally something like this will happen", said Sheriff Prator.

Trant was found on the ground outside of CCC. He was taken to LSU Hospital where he's listed in fair condition. The sheriff's office says Trant is a full-time deputy who is a retired Shreveport Police Officer.

Sheriff Prator says they'll review the incident and try to learn from it.
