Crystal Bui loves asking questions and getting answers, chasing a breaking news story, or investigating an issue that needs more attention — especially when it benefits viewers and the public.
She joins the CBS 46 team, after leading award-winning coverage of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. She won the Edward R. Murrow award in “Excellence in Sound” for her coverage of the riots in Minneapolis, and also a DuPont Award for night side team coverage.
In the Midwest, she investigated safety concerns with county school buses and drivers. Those series of reports spurred changes and led to school districts re-evaluating, and some replacing, the school bus company they used to ensure student safety.
Crystal started her career in Honolulu, Hawaii where she worked at the assignment desk. She monitored police scanners, researched and fact-checked reports before they went on air! Crystal loved the camaraderie in the newsroom and following how rapidly things can develop and change. That experience inspired her to become a news reporter.
Her first reporting job was in central Washington state, where she independently filmed, wrote, edited and produced original stories there. She won an award in 2015 for “Live Breaking News Coverage” in the northwest region for being the sole news reporter at a near-fatal SWAT stand-off in Yakima. The suspect allegedly had weapons and made a run at police. Crystal caught it all on camera as the officers made a split-second decision not to shoot.
Her next stop was Providence, Rhode Island. She covered the Michelle Carter and also the Aaron Hernandez trial. Viewers in southern New England voted her as “Best Female News Reporter” for two years in a row, in 2017 and 2018.
She later went to New York City to work as a reporter in the Big Apple. She immersed herself in the extremely fast-paced environment, covering everything from schools with mold, water main breaks and a pedestrian breaking into an airport runway.
Crystal went to school outside of Boston at Tufts University. She has a double degree in English and Women’s Studies, and a minor in Media and Communications.
In her free time, Crystal enjoys playing with her rescue dog, “Scout”. She loves the arts: museums, live music, and plays. She also loves trying out different foods and restaurants.
She’s looking forward to heading to the ocean again from Atlanta and is so excited to get to know the community in Georgia.
