BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Southern University is walking back an earlier announcement about masks on campus.

After further review, a university spokesperson says masks will no longer be mandated at most Southern University System campuses across Louisiana. However, the spokesperson says masks are still strongly encouraged for students, staff, and visitors.

On Sunday, August 14, the university originally said masks would be required on campuses.

The exception to the latest guidance is the Southern University Law Center. That campus only will mandate masks for indoor spaces.

All system campuses will continue to keep vaccine protocols in place. Students will need to provide proof of vaccination, medical or religious exemption, or a letter of dissent.

The Southern University System includes Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Southern University at New Orleans, Southern University Shreveport, Southern University Law Center, and Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
