1 child dead, another in hospital after apparent accidental shooting

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Shreveport police responded to reports of a shooting at around 5:40 p.m. on Friday, April 1.

The incident occurred on Morningside Drive, near the cross streets of Fairy Avenue and Hearne Avenue.

Officials say a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl both received gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Ochsner LSU Health hospital.

The boy, Michael Thomas, Jr. was shot in the chest and died from his injury at 7:10 p.m. The girl was struck in the shoulder, and remains in the hospital.

Police on the scene say that initial investigation shows the incident was an accident. One child got ahold of the gun, it went off, and struck both children. Two adults were home at the time of the incident.

Detectives are currently waiting for a search warrant in order to enter the home and investigate further.
