Father fatally shoots son, who was armed during confrontation, St. Charles sheriff says
ST. ROSE, La. (WVUE) - A father in St. Charles Parish fatally shot his son Tuesday after a tense confrontation in which the son was heavily armed, the sheriff says.
Officials confirm that Clayton Poche, 21, died on the scene as the result of a gunshot fired by his father Ben Poche.
Authorities say that the incident occurred in the 200 block of Dianne Drive around 5:30 p.m. on March 29.
Detectives learned that Clayton arrived at his parents’ home wearing a ballistic (bulletproof) vest and was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. He allegedly began arguing with his mother as his father returned home.
The tense confrontation escalated to the point where Clayton drew a handgun at his father. In turn, Ben grabbed his own gun, fatally shooting his son.
The sheriff said that Clayton had a history of unstable and violent behavior and has been the subject of strong psychiatric care.
“Very sad situation. A tragic situation. A long history of mental illness even for a young person,” Sheriff Greg Champagne says. “Worsened by substance abuse, alcohol, and it is really typical of the problems we’re seeing all over the country.”
Deputies say that the incident is domestic in nature.
“[Clayton] has been committed several times, usually following our arrest in various incidents. Threats of violence mostly,” Sheriff Champagne says. “I’m sure this is the most traumatic thing that anybody could ever go through, but I think the from - from what I understood - is holding up well.
