Firefighter injured in Orleans Square fire

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — A Shreveport firefighter was burned while battling a blaze at an apartment complex.

And a building at Orleans Square Apartments in the 8500 block of Chalmette Drive sustained heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the structure, the Shreveport Fire Department reports.

Residents who called 911 at 6:27 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 told dispatchers that a laundry room and pool house were on fire.

“Firefighters responding from Fire Station No. 20 reported heavy smoke soon after leaving the fire station, and a second alarm was requested by Battalion 5,” the Fire Department reports.

Engine 20 found heavy fire coming from the roof of a one-story brick building when firefighters arrived at the scene at 6:30 a.m.

It took 18 minutes for the 45 firefighters and 18 units to bring under control the blaze that destroyed the building.

No one was in the structure at the time of the fire.

The injured firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment.
