SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Mayor Adrian Perkins held a news conference on public safety on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Perkins announced Shreveport Fire Department Chief of Training John Lane will be the interim fire chief when Scott Wolverton retires.

Wolverton wished Lane well during the conference and thanked friends and family for their support during his career.

“We are public service. We serve them and them only. I want to thank them all for believing in me, for supporting our fire department and the continued support for the fire department as we move into the future,” he said.

Born and raised in the Allendale community, Lane has been with the department since 1991. He says he is ready to serve the community and knows citizens will hold him accountable.

“I am ready to serve,” he said. “To our citizens, you have the greatest fire department not only in the state but in the world. The fire department means everything to me. It’s been a calling and I like helping people. This job affords you the opportunity to be a servant for the people.”

While he says he won’t apply for the permanent chief position, Lane said he will focus on two things for the next few months: recruitment and the upcoming bond proposal Shreveport residents will be voting on next month.

Mayor Adrian Perkins says a permanent chief will be announced after the test is administered in January.
