MINDEN, La. (KSLA) — A longtime Webster Parish businessman and his wife are dead, the victims of what authorities say appears to have been a murder-suicide.

Preliminary investigation and evidence at the scene indicate that 86-year-old Carroll Howard Toms fatally shot his wife, 80-year-old Glenda Swain Toms, then turned the .38-caliber handgun on himself, Police Chief Steve Cropper said.

Based on the condition of their bodies, he added, his investigators estimate it happened sometime between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday at the couple’s residence in the 600 block of Country Club Circle.

The police chief said no note was found “but their insurance policies were laid out.”

Their deaths were reported by an employee of Toms Service Center who became concerned when he failed to show up for work Tuesday morning at the business in the 1500 block of Shreveport Road in Minden.

The worker, who had a key to the Toms residence, first attempted to call Toms then went to their home to check on them about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. That’s when she discovered Toms and his wife dead and called 911.

Their bodies are being sent to Little Rock, Ark., for autopsies, Cropper said.

Online records indicate Toms had been in business at Toms Service Center since April 1979.
