NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -
Entering the playoffs after back-to-back dominant victories is a big positive for the Saints, but so is getting back into more of an offensive rhythm with wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. Nine catches against the Panthers is the most he’s had since week five, and it’s a good sign that he and a healthy Drew Brees are clearly on the same page.
“The best part is just winning as a team right,” says Sanders. “We were able to get the win.”
But that said, there was a motivating factor behind the scenes to get Sanders the ball. With 13 targets, it was obvious there was more at play than just moving the chains.
“I just know we were trying to get Emmanuel at least eight catches in this game,” said quarterback Drew Brees with a laugh. “Down the stretch, you’re just trying to feed him.”
Those eight catches got him 60 receptions on the season, which triggered an incentive bonus in Sanders’ contract to the tune of $500 thousand. And you better believe Sanders was keeping count.
“It felt good to catch eight passes and for Drew to believe in me and to keep feeding me catches to get that incentive,” says Sanders.
Throwing his hands up in celebration after he made the eighth catch, it was clear that he was well aware of the check headed his way. But what will feel even better is hoisting the Lombardi trophy. Sanders has done it before, like a few other guys on this roster. And he’s more than ready to help win another.
