Police say they received a call about 11:40 a.m. about a gunfire at Residences of SpringRidge, an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Bert Kouns Industrial Drive.
A man in an apartment there reportedly became agitated at groundskeepers and fire a gun at them as they were mowing and edging, police Cpl. Marcus Hines said.
The veteran officer was shot after he and other officers responded to the call about the gunfire.
“He was struck in the chest area,” police Cpl. Angie Willhite said. “He was wearing his vest. It actually traveled into his body very close to his vest.”
The wounded officer is expected to be okay, Hines added.
After the ensuing standoff, medics could be seen rolling the shirtless suspect out on a gurney. He subsequently was placed in the back seat of a Shreveport police unit.
Police arrested William C. Torrans at 3:55 p.m. then booked him into the Shreveport City Jail at 4:50 p.m., booking records show.
The 65-year-old Shreveport man is charged with one count each of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm.
