Kids get chance to ‘shop with a cop’ in Texarkana

Texarkana police officers, firefighters take nearly 300 children Christmas shopping

TEXARKANA, USA (KSLA) - There were plenty of smiles on Tuesday for nearly 300 children in Texarkana and the surrounding area all thanks to a group of police and firefighters from both sides of the state line.

Children at both the Texarkana Arkansas Walmart and the Texarkana Texas Target store were there to get a chance to shop with a cop.

“This is my favorite day of the whole year,” said Texarkana Arkansas Police Department’s Less Munn. “You get to bring the kids here and have a big time with them and watch them play.”

During the year, both Texarkana's poilce and fire departments raise funds to take chidlren shopping. This year, Texarkana, Arkansas sponsored 160 kids with a $100 donation.

"It helps a lot for the struggle of not being able to get for a child — especially mine," said parent Valerie Bond.

"We really don't have that much money," said Culleon Hubbard. "So we really, really appreciate it."

The excitement and joy were not only for the children and their families. Texarkana Texas police officer Jerrika Weaver and her mother Captain Renee Murphy with the Linden Texas police department did their part in supporting the occasion.

"This is something special I do with her so we can give back to the community, so we enjoy it," said Ofc. Weaver.

"I've been doing it for almost four years now and it's a great feeling," said Ofc. Murphy.

Children participating in the event were selected by various organizations that work with children in the Texarkana area.
