ASCENSION PARISH, La. (WAFB) - One person was killed and others were airlifted from a head-on collision in Ascension Parish Sunday night.

The wreck happened just before 8:30 p.m. Highway 70 near Brady Street on Sunday, Oct. 6.

The crash claimed the life of James Elphage, 38, of Baton Rouge.

Louisiana State Police say Elphage was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 70 in a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. At the same time, a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 70. For reasons still under investigation, Elphage crossed the centerline into the opposing lane, which resulted in the Hyundai striking the Chevrolet head-on.

Elphage was unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries, LSP says. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Tahoe was properly restrained and sustained serious injuries. She was also transported to a local hospital for treatment.

First responders say at least four people were treated for injuries in total.

Impairment is unknown at this time.

This crash remains under investigation.
