BARKSDALE AFB, La. (KSLA) - From fighter jets to cargo planes, an amazing display of aviation will be front and center for the 2019 Defenders of Liberty air show at Barksdale Air Force Base this weekend.
That includes the F-35, a 5th generation jet fighter considered to be the best in the world.
“I like being King Kong in that airplane. I flew F-15s before which it’s an incredible airplane. But the F-35, it goes out there, and if you’re operating it correctly nobody can touch you,” Capt. Andrew “Dojo” Olson, USAF F-35 pilot.
KSLA also spent some time on Thursday with the unsung heroes of military aviation, the flight crews. They’re the ones to make sure everything is “good to go” before a mission even gets underway.
“We’re the best of the best. that’s why we got selected for this team,” TSgt. Hilario Alaniz, USAF F-35 Crew Chief.
If you want to get your first real close look at an F-35 for yourself, the 15-minute aerial demonstration gets underway at 1:30 pm on Saturday and 1:15 pm on Sunday.
More aircraft arrived Thursday and Friday ranging from the B-1 Lancer, the B-2 bomber, KC-135, and of course Barksdale’s fleet of B-52 bombers.
There will also be all kinds of aerial performances to expect including the U.S. Army’s Black Daggers Parachute Team.
The Defenders of Liberty air show is Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19. Gates open at 9:00 a.m., the show starts at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free.
There is also free, on-base parking through the North and West gates. No overnight parking permitted.
The last air show in 2017 attracted an estimated 160,000 people. Organizers are hoping to at least match that figure this year.
The 2019 Barksdale Defenders of Liberty Air & Space Show is organized and hosted by the 2nd Bomb Wing Barksdale Air Force Base with the support of the Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council.
