RUSTON, La. (KSLA) - The Lady Techsters softball team just loaded up and started heading south to compete in the NCAA Regionals.
The road trip to Baton Rouge comes three weeks to the day since a deadly EF-3 tornado tore up the university’s campus and the adjoining city of Ruston.
Louisiana Tech President Les Guice couldn’t be prouder:
The Lady Techsters, the Conference USA regular season and tournament champions, will face Big 12 foe Texas Tech (39-14) at 2 p.m. Friday in Tiger Park.
This will be LaTech’s second NCAA Regional appearance in the past three years and its 10th appearance in the softball program’s history.
This year’s team has won 44 games and the program’s first regular season conference title.
Last weekend, the Lady Techsters went 3-0 on their way to claiming the C-USA Tournament title, including a 3-1 victory over Marshall in the title game Saturday.
“I’m just incredibly proud of this team and (what) these ladies have accomplished,” LaTech head coach Mark Montgomery told Louisiana Tech Athletics about the Baton Rouge Regional. "We’ve been to Baton Rouge and experienced Tiger Park a number of times the past few years, so it will be a familiar venue for us.
“We have a senior-led team that won’t be afraid of the stage.”
Joining LaTech and Texas Tech in the Baton Rouge Regional’s four-team field will be the host LSU Tigers (40-16) and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Monmouth (36-16).
“This is a great field and I expect some great softball to be played this weekend,” Montgomery told Louisiana Tech Athletics. “We will go down with the game plan of representing our school, community and program with the same passion and laser focus that we have been playing with. It should be fun.”
