SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The YMCA of Northwest Louisiana will no longer host tackle football programs. They will only host flag football programs for kids.

“We looked at recent studies of brain injuries due to tackle football and decided to end those programs,” Sports Director John Ford says. “A child’s brain is not fully developed until 12 years old and we saw the effects of CTE on the brain.”

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease that is caused by repetitive brain trauma.

Ford says research shows that CTE can start showing up when a person turns 20 years old. Many times, CTE is caused by a football trauma.

Evangel Christian Academy Head Football Coach Byron Dawson has taught his athletes how to property play football and avoid injury.

“Do the things to make sure your athletes are safe,” Dawson says. “Using the proper techniques and making sure you’re using the right equipment to make sure your guys are safe.”

Coach Dawson supports flag football but wants people to see how proper training can prevent serious injury.
