LEXINGTON, KY (WAFB) - No. 19 LSU upset No. 5 Kentucky, 73-71, on a last second tip-in Tuesday night in Rupp Arena. LSU improved to 20-4 overall and 10-1 in SEC. Kentucky fell to 20-4 and 9-2 in SEC.

With :06 left in the game LSU inbounded the ball and junior guard Skylar Mays took it the length of the court, but missed the layup. However, as the ball bounced off the rim, senior forward Kavell Bigby-Williams tipped it in just before the buzzer sounded. Officials reviewed the play and determined Bigby-Williams had tipped it before time expired. The fans in Rupp Arena wanted a goaltending call on the play. The rule book doesn’t allow goaltending to be reviewed, so the officials could not consider that when reviewing the play.

This was LSU’s first win on the road over a top five team since 1980. That win was also against Kentucky. The Wildcats had been riding a 10-game win streak going into the game and may have been looking ahead to Saturday’s game against No. 1 Tennessee.

Sophomore guard Tremont Waters scored a team high 15 points for the Tigers. He also dished out five assists and recorded three steals. Freshman forward Naz Reid finished with a team high seven rebounds. He also scored 12 points. Mays chipped in 11 points and pulled down two rebounds. He also had two steals. Freshman forward Emmitt Williams had a big second half, replacing Reid, who got into foul trouble. Williams finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore forward PJ Washington finished with a game high 20 points for the Wildcats. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman guard Keldon Johnson scored 16 and compiled five rebounds. Freshman guard Tyler Herro scored 12 to go along with four assists.

LSU will travel to Georgia on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
